Samuel appears in the 1850 Pennsylvania, Mifflin County, Armagh Township Census enumerated July 30, 1850 living in the household of Jacob Kepperling whose wife's name is Elizabeth, his age is 3 and his last name is listed as Strong. Also enumerated are Sarah Strong, Samuel's Grandmother age 55, Samuel Strong age 18, Foster Strong age 15, Martha Strong age 13. All were born in PA.
From Samuel's Civil War Pension Application; "My father came out of the Mexican war, wounded and died soon after, and my mother remarried to another man, he was killed in the battle of Shilo. I lived with my grandmother until went in to the service. I lived with my Grandmother Mrs. Sarah Strong, who resided from 1850 to 1860, in Center county Pa." The Mexican war ended in February 1848.

Sarah's age is 64 Samuel is 13. Also enumerated are John Strong age 29, Martha Strong age 21, James F. Strong age 23. All were born in PA.
Samuel enlisted as a private in Company H of the 91st Pennsylvania Volunteers Infantry March 17, 1865 at Williamsport, PA. He served for 3 months and 24 days until he was honorably discharged July 10, 1865 in Philadelphia, PA. He was serving for a man named William Hawckman. (not sure of the spelling of the last name)

Also from Samuel's Civil War Pension Application, part dated August 20, 1913; "That his several places of residence since leaving the service have been as follows: Monroe Wis, Center County Pa, to 1868, Troy Ohio to 1881, Wells County Indiana, for the last year Montpelier Blackford County Indiana."

He is listed as head of household with his Wife Florence B. age 25 or 28 years, birth listed as Ohio, Daughter M (Myrtle) age 6 years, Daughter Maud (Maude) age 4 years, Daughter age 3 years (Mary), Son age 2 years (Howard), and a son age 7 months (Lyman). All children were born in Ohio.
