James birth mother was Norma Mae Jackson, his birth father was Talford Metsker. Norma filed a paternity suit against Talford even before James was born. At the age of 6 months James was a foster child and living in the household of Otto and Ethel Palmer. While he went by James Lee Palmer, he legally changed his name in November of 1979.

MUNCIE--James L. "Jim" Palmer, 81, passed away Monday, August 14, 2011, at his residence after an extended illness.

He was born on October 25, 1929 in Muncie, the son of Ott and Ethel Palmer.

He graduated from Muncie Central High School in 1948. Jim worked as a mold maker for Owens Illinois for 27 years and later retired from the Delaware County Assessors office. He was also the owner of American Handicraft, worked for Marsh Supermarket in the security department, and was a manager for American Excelsior.

Jim was a 70 year member of Shawnee Heights Baptist Church, Moose Lodge #33, Academy of Model Aeronautics, and a charter member of the Delaware County Sheriffs Reserve.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara (Richards) Palmer; a daughter, Elaine Padden (husband-Fred), Indianapolis; grandchildren, Jenny Sahm and Jordan Saunders, both of Fishers; a brother, Lex Richards; five nieces, Toni Faquher (husband-Terry), Linda Kinnaird (husband-Roger), Judy Stallings, Jan Stewart, and Jill Wilkin (husband-Bob); and a nephew, Larry "Skipper" Palmer (wife-Janis).

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Woody Palmer (wife-Gertrude); a sister, Lucile Coffey (husband-Walter); and a sister-in-law, Oreda Richards.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel, with Pastor Dennis Hammons officiating. Burial will follow in Elm Ridge Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday at the mortuary and one hour prior to service time.

MR. WILLIS (WOODY) PALMER, 53, of 1680 Magnolia Ave., Winter Park, died Monday.

He was with the J. C. Penney Co. for 28 years in Muncie, Ind.: Jackson, Mich., and Decorah, Iowa, serving as a store manager. He came to Sanford in 1958 after resigning from the Penny organization and purchased and operated a motel.

Later, Mr. Palmer joined the staff of station WHOO as an account executive.

He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Winter Park; past president of Lions and Rotary Clubs, member of Anthony Lodge 171, F & AM, Albany, Ind.: Elks Lodge, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Land O Lakes and Mid-Florida Golf and Country Clubs.

During World War II, he served as lieutenant of infantry in the Pacific.

He was a native of Muncie, Ind., And attended Ball State College there.

Widow, Gertrude M.; Son, Skipper L., Winter Park; daughters, Mrs. Linda Simpson, Orlando, Misses Judy L., Tony S., Winter Park; mother, Mrs. Otto Palmer, Muncie; brothers, James Palmer, Muncie, Joe Sheridan, Muncie, Edward Sheridan, Miami; sister, Mrs. Walter Coffey, Muncie; grandchildren, Joni, Kim, Lori Berg, Harold Paul Simpson, Orlando, survive.

Funeral services for Mr. Willis (Woody), 53, 1680 Magnolia Ave., who died Monday will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Garden Chapel Home for Funerals, with Pastor Roy M. Lund of the Redeemer Lutheran Church of Winter Park officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be: Mr. Jack Hitchcock, Mr. Milton Waltzman, Mr Charlie Wise, Mr. Wally Hiff (sp), Mr. Cecil West, Mr. H. A. Douglass.
