If we look at the 1870 Census which doesn't appear to list everyone correctly it looks like:

Miller W = Nicholas 34 M W Kentucky
" P.M = Mariah 27 F W Virginia
" M = Bruce 9 M W Iowa
" A = Monroe 7 M W "
" H = Alvey 2/12 M W Nevada

From the Article FORMER SENATOR JOHN H. MILLERS GRANDSON VISITS HAWTHORNE which originally appeared August 19, 2010 in the "Mineral County Independent-News of Hawthorne, Nevada"

"By the time that the new town of Hawthorne was ready to receive its new residents in April of 1881, Mrs. Miller and Owen Crutcher, a local teamster, had been married slightly less than a year. According to all accounts, John Miller and his brother Alvey arrived at the town having taken a steamboat down the length of Walker Lake to get there. Eventually the four Miller brothers resided at Hawthorne Monroe, Bruce, Alvey and John - and, together with their sister Lilly and half brother Walter Crutcher, the Miller and Crutcher children were raised in Hawthorne, attending the first school in the town."

So in April of 1881, Monroe, Bruce, Alvey, John and Lilly Miller were living together.

Ida, the first born, was not included in the census, assume she has died previously.

We know from the 1900 census that Monroe was born in March 1863, making him 7 in 1870 and also from the 1900 census that Alvey was born in April 1870. Leaving Bruce as the 9 year old child.

John and Lilly were both born later in the 1880's.

This morning our little community was shocked to learn that Monroe MILLER, who had been sick with pneumonia for about two weeks, was dead. His condition was known to be serious, but it was hoped that his rugged constitution would withstand the trial, but such was not to be. At about 11:00 he breathed his last, surrounded by his relatives.

Besides a devoted and heartbroken wife, he leaves to mourn his death, his mother, Mrs. CRUTCHER; two sisters, Mrs. J.E. ADAMS and Mrs. Fred BARNES; two brothers John Harvey MILLER and Alvey MILLER. The death of Monroe MILLER has cast a gloom over the town as he was held in high esteem by all.

He was a member in good standing of Lakeview Lodge # 17 A.O.U.W. in which order he was insured for $2,000. He was a native of Iowa, aged 39 years.
