RACHEL A. SHELTON, 84

The mother of Gloria (Mike) Ray of Montpelier, Rachel A. Shelton, 84, of Hartford City died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2007.

Mrs. Shelton was a homemaker and also operated Rachel's Beauty Shop in Roll from 1958 to 1982.

She had been active in the Roll Methodist Church Ladies' Aid and the Roll Parent-Teachers Organization. A longtime resident of Roll, she had lived in recent months at Heritage Commons in Hartford City.

Born on Jan. 3, 1923, in Grant County, she was a daughter of Homer and Florence (Miller) Ross, and a 1941 graduate of Roll High School. Her marriage on March 9, 1941, was to Floyd E. Shelton, who preceded her in death on June 13, 2006.

Survivors, in addition to the daughter in Montpelier, include a son, Lewis (Marcia McFarland) Shelton of Manhattan, Kan.; sisters Thelma (Bill) Thomas of Hartford City, Irene (Bill) James of Van Buren and Joan (Jerry) Glancy of Wichita, Kan.; brothers Kenneth (Kathleen) Ross of Roll, Dale (Joy) Ross of Marion and Roscoe (Janet) Ross of Montpelier; a granddaughter; four stepgrandchildren; 10 stepgreat-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by sisters Helen Ross and Ruth Whetzel and by brothers Francis (Jack) and Everett Ross.

Calling is from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Waters Funeral Home, Hartford City.

Services are at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Additional calling is planned one hour prior to services.

Burial will be in Roll Cemetery. Preferred memorials are to Family Hospice of Northeast Indiana.

Una was living with her father's family in the 1900 Census. She married James Tatum in 1905 and appers with him in the 1910 census. James died in 1915 and Una is back living with her father's family in the 1920 Census listed as Una Tatum. In 1922, Una married Amzie Lockett and appears with him in the 1930 Census. In the 1940 Census, Una is back living with her father's family, listed as Una Lockett.

Mary Whitson died sometime after the birth of Addie Mae, May 7, 1886 and before sometime in 1888 as Henry appears on the Joliet, IL city directory for that year.

A note found on an Ancestry Family Tree states "Henry's great grandson, Keith told me that Mary died and left Henry with 4 small children. He said his grandpa {Francis} said they lived with family when they were little and that Henry came back to IL. to work for awhile. Additionally "After Henry's wife Mary died, Birt went to live with the John Dixon family, Francis with his aunt & uncle, Mary & John Fouser. He also lived with the Al Geist family. Sam lived with John A.Scotts. Addie went to live with the Bill Robinson family in Mt.Ayr."

Henry then married Matilda Downes nee Lawson sometime about 1894 as they are living in Chicago and have been married 6 years as it appears in the 1900 Federal Census. Besides Matilda's children from her previous marriage they had one daughter together, Eva Whitson.

In the 1840 Blackford County, IN census there are two girls listed between the ages of 5-10, one would be Martha who was listed in the 1850 census by name and was approximately 5 years of age. Lydia was married in 1849 and wouldn't have appeared on the 1850 census with Jeremiah Lockett and family. Lydia shows up in David Palmer's household.
